Professor Paul Hodkinson is a sociologist at the University of Surrey's Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. His research focuses on contemporary fathering, masculinities, youth cultures, and digital media's role in identity formation. He has authored influential books such as New Fathers, Mental Health and Digital Communication and Goth: Identity, Style and Subculture.
Key research projects include the ESRC-funded study on paternal mental health and collaborations with organizations like the National Childbirth Trust to develop resources for parental support. He supervises PhD students in areas including fatherhood studies and youth cultures, having guided 10 doctoral candidates to completion.
Teaching includes modules on media sociology, youth culture, and mediated societies. His work on caregiving fathers' digital engagement and the intersection of gender roles with parenting equity has garnered significant academic and public attention. Ongoing projects explore hair loss narratives among men and the impact of societal expectations on fatherhood.
