Prof Paul Graham is a Professor of Neuroethology (Ecology and Evolution) at the University of Sussex's School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how neural and sensory mechanisms in insects, particularly ants and wood ants, enable adaptive behaviors like navigation. He explores biomimetic applications to develop robots inspired by natural systems. Graham earned his PhD at Sussex under Prof Tom Collett, studying spatial cognition in ants, followed by postdoctoral roles funded by BBSRC, Leverhulme, and RCUK grants. He became a Reader in 2012 before his current professorship.
His research integrates neuroethology, artificial intelligence, and robotics to decode insect navigation strategies. Key interests include visual guidance systems, path integration, and the neural basis of spatial memory. Graham's work bridges biology and engineering, aiming to translate natural intelligence into technological solutions.
