Paul Garrett is a Professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, where he maintains an active research and teaching program. His office is located in Vincent Hall on the Minneapolis campus, and he teaches advanced graduate courses including Abstract Algebra (Math 8201-8202), Real Analysis (Math 8602), and Complex Analysis (Math 8701-8702).
His research focuses on automorphic forms, L-functions, representations, harmonic analysis, and number theory. Professor Garrett has developed extensive course materials covering algebra, analysis, modular forms, and related mathematical disciplines, all freely available on his website. He has supervised over 20 Ph.D. students since 1989, with recent graduates including Dev Hegde (2024) and Joe Dickinson (2023), working on topics related to Eisenstein series, automorphic forms, and L-functions.
Professor Garrett has composed numerous written preliminary examinations for graduate students in Algebra, Complex Analysis, and Real Analysis from 2011 through 2022. His teaching philosophy emphasizes mathematical maturity, proof-writing skills, and conceptual understanding over competition among students. He maintains an active online presence with comprehensive course notes, problem sets with solutions, and mathematical vignettes covering advanced topics in pure mathematics.
