Paul Elsbernd

Dr. Paul Elsbernd is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University (USU) and a Staff Neurologist/Neuroimmunologist at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). He holds adjunct roles at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and serves in the U.S. Air Force. His research focuses on neuroimmunology, particularly MOG Antibody Disease and Multiple Sclerosis, alongside contributions to blast traumatic brain injury modeling. Dr. Elsbernd also leads educational initiatives such as the SAUSHEC Department of Medicine Grand Rounds and the Air Force Neurology Residency Program.

• Education: MD from Georgetown University, MS in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University, BS in Physics from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
• Military Service: Commissioned in 2007; served as a military scientist before medical training.

His research interests span neuroimmunology, MS treatments, and computational approaches to neurological trauma. Recent publications emphasize novel therapies for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and MOGAD, alongside studies on blast injury patterns. He has received awards including the Army Achievement Medal (2023) and the Distinguished Graduate honor from the Air Force Academy (2007).
