Paul Douglas Newman is a Professor of Early American History and Public History at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, affiliated with the Social Science Division and the History Department. He joined the faculty in 1995 and coordinates the Certificate in Public and Applied History, as well as internship programs. His teaching spans Early American History (e.g., Colonial America, Civil War era) and Public History (e.g., museum science, documentary filmmaking).
Dr. Newman holds a BA from York College of Pennsylvania (1990), MA from University of Kentucky (1992), and PhD in Early American History (1996). His research focuses on Pennsylvania History, Native American political identity, and Revolutionary-era rebellions. Major works include Fries Rebellion: The Enduring Struggle for the American Revolution (2004) and Pennsylvania History: Essays and Documents (2010). Current projects explore Indigenous sovereignty in Pennsylvania.
His publications blend academic rigor with public engagement, including works on historical documentaries and community history projects. Recent articles address Indigenous diplomacy and colonial conflicts. Awards include the History Channel History Teacher of the Year (2008) and University of Pittsburgh's Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Public Service (2009).
Dr. Newman has secured grants such as the 2017 American Philosophical Society Research Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship (2005). His public history contributions include co-authoring Eighty Years at the Mountain Playhouse (2019), documenting regional cultural heritage.
