Paul Dirks is an Adjunct Professor at James Cook University and an Honorary Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Geosciences. He holds a PhD in structural-metamorphic geology from the University of Melbourne (1990) and an MSc from Utrecht University (1987). His research focuses on structural geology, tectonic evolution, and mineralization patterns, particularly in cratonic terrains. He has contributed to over 95 peer-reviewed papers and led projects across five continents.
Key roles include Founding Director of AfricaArray (2003), reversing geoscience brain-drain in Africa, and serving as Head of School of Geosciences at Wits. His work bridges geology and human evolution, notably through involvement in discovering Australopithecus sediba (2010) and Homo naledi fossils. Consulting includes structural mapping for SRK and mining projects like Geita Gold Mine.
Research interests span tectonics, ore deposits (gold, copper), and landscape dynamics. Recent projects include Cu isotopes in groundwater exploration (2023), metamorphic diamond studies (2022), and Africa’s tectonic evolution (2021–2024). Awards include Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa.
Grants and collaborations include the Microanalytical Facility for Resources Development project (2022) and studies on Mt Isa and Geita deposits. His work emphasizes field-based geology and multidisciplinary observational networks.
