Paul Deutchman

Paul Deutchman is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Philosophy, Politics, & Economics (PPE) Program at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. He also contributes to the Center for Social Norms and Behavioral Dynamics. His research focuses on collective action, social norms, and cooperative behavior through experimental methods. He holds a PhD in Social Psychology from Boston College (2023) and has taught courses on behavioral economics, research methods, and moral psychology.

• Education: PhD in Social Psychology (Boston College, 2023); MA in Psychology (Boston College, 2020); BA in Psychology with Anthropology minor (Skidmore College, 2017).

Research Interests: Dr. Deutchman investigates how social cognitive processes underpin cooperation and norm adherence across diverse contexts. His work examines how beliefs about others influence norm dynamics, motivations behind punitive behavior, and the development of cooperative strategies in children and adults. Recent studies explore descriptive norm effects on moral evaluations and the role of common knowledge in coordination problems.

Awards: SPSP Psychgeist Scholarship (2023), Boston College Presidential Fellowship (2018–2023), Boston College Dissertation Fellowship (2022).

• Teaching & Grants: Primary instructor for advanced research methods courses; mentored over 20 students. Secured grants including a $15,000 Boston College Research Incentive Grant (2021).

Labs & Collaborations: Active member of Penn's Center for Social Norms and Behavioral Dynamics, collaborating on interdisciplinary projects. Guest editor for Behavioral Sciences and peer reviewer for top journals like Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
