Paul-David Lutz is a Lecturer and researcher in Anthropology at the University of Sydney. His work focuses on applied anthropology, development studies, and Southeast Asian ethnography, with a specialization in multi-ethnic upland communities in Laos and Vietnam. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2021) and previously worked as a rural livelihoods advisor in Southeast Asia. His research examines the impacts of war, biomedicine, and infrastructure projects on cosmology, land-use, and politics in upland regions.
Education: PhD in Anthropology, University of Sydney (2021); prior professional experience in rural development advisory roles in Laos and Vietnam.
Research interests include ethnographic history, medical anthropology, and the intersection of state policies with indigenous cosmologies. His recent publications explore media challenges in contemporary Laos, post-war ethnic dynamics, and agrarian transitions in upland communities. He has contributed to projects funded by KfW Development Bank, UNDP/UNODC, and German Development Agency (GIZ).
Teaching includes courses on cultural difference, Southeast Asian politics, and medical anthropology. He has served as a lecturer, tutor, and guest lecturer in multiple undergraduate and graduate anthropology courses.
Consultancy work includes livelihood development reports for Vietnamese and Lao ministries, focusing on agro-extension and non-timber forest products management. He has also engaged in public outreach through podcasts and articles on topics like hydropower impacts and alternative development in Laos.
