Paul D'Alton is an Associate Professor at the School of Psychology, University College Dublin, and a former Head of the Department of Psychology at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. He holds a BA from Dublin City University, DClinPsy from Trinity College Dublin, MPhil from Trinity College Dublin, and an MSc from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His research focuses on health equity, mental health policy, and mindfulness-based interventions, particularly in clinical settings. He co-directs the MSc in Mindfulness-Based Interventions and supervises postgraduate students in clinical psychology programs.
Professional roles include serving on the European Federation of Psychology Associations Board of Human Rights (2016–2019) and the Global Network of Psychologists for Human Rights Advisory Board. He chairs UCD’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion committees and advises Oxford and Bangor Universities on psychology programs. His research addresses healthcare disparities for marginalized groups, including individuals with severe mental health difficulties and cancer patients.
Major achievements include shaping Ireland’s National Cancer Strategy (2017–2027) to prioritize psychological needs of cancer patients and co-chairing the 18th International Psycho-oncology Congress (2016). His work on healthcare workers’ mental health during the pandemic and digital health interventions for advanced cancer care highlights his commitment to translational research. Awards include a PSI Fellowship (2016) and an All Ireland Institute International Fellowship (2014).
