- Director, Perinatal Research Centre
- Foundation Professor of Perinatal Medicine, University of Queensland
- Deputy Director, University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research
- President-elect, Paediatrics and Child Health Division, Royal Australasian College of Physicians
- Chair, Queensland Clinician Scientists Association
Professor Colditz's research focuses on clinically important perinatal health problems and their translation to clinical practice. His work spans brain injury and neuroprotection, seizure identification and treatment, neural plasticity, neurodevelopmental outcomes, and environmental influences on brain development. His team has become an international leader in developing the preterm connectome using MRI technology. His research program bridges basic science, clinical trials, and health policy implementation, with a strong emphasis on improving outcomes for preterm infants and their families.
Analysis of Professor Colditz's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants, with particular emphasis on brain imaging techniques, predictive biomarkers, and early intervention strategies. His work spans multiple disciplines including neonatology, neurology, medical imaging, and clinical psychology, demonstrating a highly interdisciplinary approach to understanding and improving outcomes for vulnerable newborns. The publications show a progression from basic mechanisms of brain injury toward clinical applications and implementation science.
- Australian patent (2006 Approved 2006906381) for a method for detecting EEG seizures in newborns
- High-impact publications defining clinical practice in Lancet, JAMA, and American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology
- Extensive leadership roles in national research panels including NHMRC project and program grant review panels
- Chair of Queensland Maternal and Perinatal Quality Council
- Leader of State Clinical Guideline on Neonatal Seizures
Professor Colditz advises numerous postgraduate students from clinical, engineering, and scientific backgrounds while maintaining active clinical practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He has led multiple multi-site randomized controlled trials and serves on numerous national and international research panels. His academic leadership extends to chairing the Queensland Clinician Scientists Association and holding senior roles within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He is actively involved in knowledge translation, bridging the gap between research findings and clinical practice through commercialization efforts and health policy development.
Professor Colditz leads the Perinatal Research Centre, one of the largest research centers within the University of Queensland's School of Medicine. His team includes researchers from diverse disciplines including neuroscience, engineering, and clinical medicine, working collaboratively to address critical challenges in perinatal health. The center maintains strong partnerships with clinical services at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and other major healthcare institutions across Queensland.
