Paul Byrnes is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Northern Michigan University’s College of Business. He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting and Accounting Information Systems from Rutgers University, a Master of Accountancy from Michigan State University, and undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Management, and Psychology from Lake Superior State University. A Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Paul brings over a decade of private-sector experience in accounting, administration, and management to his academic role.
Research Interests
His research focuses on the automation of accounting and auditing functions to improve productivity, the application of machine learning to data analytics challenges, and the use of the REA framework for database design. These areas align with broader trends in leveraging technology to enhance traditional accounting practices.

Paul’s work spans cluster analysis in entrepreneurship, audit analytics, outlier detection, and the evolution of auditing methodologies.
