Paul Bills is Reader in Bio-Metrology at the University of Huddersfield's School of Computing and Engineering, Department of Engineering. He heads the Bio-Metrology Research Group and serves as Director of Home Recruitment. Paul is a key co-investigator in the EPSRC Future Metrology Hub, leading research in metrology for medical and biological applications, bridging implant technology with characterization of bio-active films and biological structures.
Paul's educational background includes:
- BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham (1999)
- MSc in Engineering Design and Its Management from the University of Huddersfield (2000)
- PhD in Orthopaedic Wear Measurement from the Centre for Precision Technologies (2008)
His research focuses on applying metrology to medical and biological fields, with emphasis on orthopaedic implants and additive manufacturing. A significant portion of his current work involves developing analysis tools to assess additive manufactured structures for medical applications. His expertise spans surface metrology, wear measurement, biofilm analysis, and international standards development in metrology. Paul previously served as Senior Lecturer in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering and held various leadership roles including Director of Graduate Education.
Paul's recent publications demonstrate strong integration of advanced metrology techniques with additive manufacturing in medical contexts. His work frequently employs X-ray computed tomography for analyzing porosity in additively manufactured components and evaluating clinical performance of 3D-printed dental and orthopaedic implants. The research consistently bridges engineering principles with medical applications to improve precision and reliability of medical devices through advanced measurement science.
Paul has supervised numerous PhD students through the Bio-Metrology Research Group and has held significant roles including course leadership for Mechanical and Energy Engineering programs. His research has been supported through major projects including the Future Advanced Metrology Hub.
Paul leads the Bio-Metrology Research Group and is a key member of the Centre for Precision Technologies. He collaborates extensively with industry partners like DePuy International Ltd (Johnson & Johnson) and academic institutions worldwide on projects related to implant technology and advanced metrology. His external positions include Visiting Professor at Beni-Suef University since October 2020.
