Dr. Paul Balcombe is an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London and concurrently a lecturer in Chemical Engineering and Renewable Energy at Queen Mary University of London. He is affiliated with the Sustainable Gas Institute (SGI), Energy Futures Lab, Network of Excellence in Air Quality, and SGI's Hydrogen and Visiting Researchers programs. His research focuses on environmental and economic impacts of low-carbon energy supply chains, with expertise in life cycle analysis, process simulation, and behavioral economics.
Education:
- MEng Chemical Engineering (First Class), University of Manchester (2002–2006)
- Chartered Engineer (gained during industry work, 2006–2010)
- PhD in multi-disciplinary analysis of small-scale renewable energy technologies (2010–2014), University of Manchester
Research Interests: Decarbonization pathways, fossil fuel roles in decarbonization, energy policy efficacy, and the integration of renewable energy technologies. His work addresses how to maintain living standards while reducing environmental impacts, supported by interdisciplinary methods combining technical, economic, and behavioral approaches.
Affiliations & Roles: Previously a Research Fellow at SGI leading the Methane and Environment Programme. Active in policy-oriented research to align energy systems with climate targets.
