Paul Aylin

Professor Paul Aylin serves as Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at Imperial College London's School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine. He holds key affiliations with the Artificial Intelligence Network, Dr Foster Unit, Institute of Global Health Innovation, NIHR Health Protection Research Unit for Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (2014-2020), and Patient Safety Translational Research Centre. Additionally, he serves as a non-executive director on the West London NHS Trust board.

His academic foundation includes medical training at the University of Dundee followed by public health specialization. Prior to joining Imperial in 1997, he gained three years of experience as a Medical Statistician at the Office for National Statistics.

Professor Aylin pioneers healthcare quality and safety research through innovative analysis of routinely collected clinical and administrative data. His work develops advanced statistical methods for large-scale healthcare datasets, creating national surveillance systems like the Real-Time Monitoring System (RTM). Key contributions span patient safety indicators, risk prediction modeling, and mortality surveillance, with significant policy impacts including NHS weekend service improvements.

He leads major NIHR-funded initiatives including the Digital Health Theme, Patient Safety Research Collaboration, and Imperial Health Protection Research Unit. Recent principal investigator roles examine mortality surveillance systems and surgical outcomes during pregnancy. His team specializes in data linkage, public health informatics, and measurement methodology.

Professor Aylin has supervised numerous PhD projects on healthcare data analysis, including integrated cancer pathways, quality variation studies, and primary care safety indicators. His research directly influences national healthcare monitoring frameworks.
