Professor Paul Ashley serves as Professor of Paediatric Dentistry at University College London's Eastman Dental Institute, where he has maintained a continuous academic appointment since 1998. He currently directs the Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry and serves as Deputy Programme Director for the MSc in Paediatric Dentistry, demonstrating leadership across multiple educational programs.
His academic foundation includes:
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Manchester (1991)
- Fellow of Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1993)
- PhD in Caries Diagnosis from the University of Manchester (1997)
Professor Ashley's research spans several critical domains in pediatric oral healthcare. He collaborates extensively with Professor Anne Young on developing innovative dental restorative materials, focusing on improving composite properties and resin bonding techniques. His partnership with Professor Ian Needleman explores the intersection of oral health and athletic performance, producing influential position statements on sports dentistry and mouthguard use. A significant portion of his work addresses evidence-based approaches to managing pain and anxiety in pediatric dental patients, with multiple systematic reviews published in the Cochrane Database. More recently, his research has expanded into sustainability within dental practice, examining environmental impacts of materials like nitrous oxide sedation and toothbrush selection.
Analysis of his publication trends reveals consistent contributions to clinical pediatric dentistry with growing emphasis on interdisciplinary connections between dentistry and broader health domains. His work demonstrates progression from technical dental research toward population health perspectives, including studies on pandemic impacts on dental services and the relationship between periodontal health and physical fitness.
As an educator, Professor Ashley has shaped dental training through his leadership roles, previously serving as Director of Education (Operations) for the UCL Eastman Dental Institute from 2007-2008. He is frequently invited to present at national and international conferences, sharing expertise in pediatric dental care and evidence-based practice.
