Paul Ammann (Associate Professor) and Jeff Offutt (Professor) are faculty members in the Software Engineering department at George Mason University. They co-authored the widely used textbook Introduction to Software Testing (2nd edition, 2016), which defines software testing as applying precise criteria to software structures or models. Their work addresses modern software challenges, including object-oriented systems, web applications, and embedded software. Both have taught courses such as SWE 437, SWE 637, and SWE 737 as recently as 2019.
Their research focuses on model-driven testing, test automation frameworks, coverage criteria (graph-based, logic-based, syntax-based), and regression testing. They developed supporting tools like Graph Coverage Web App and muJava Mutation Tool. Royalties from their book fund scholarships for software engineering students at George Mason University.
