Patrick Waelbroeck is a Professor of Industrial Economics and Econometrics at Télécom Paris, part of the Institut Mines-Télécom. He holds a thesis in Economics from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His research focuses on the economics of innovation, intellectual property, internet economics, and personal data, with a technical emphasis on applied microeconometrics.
He leads the Economics (ECO) research team and is affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Institute of Innovation (i3). As a member of the EPIP association (European Policy for Intellectual Property), he served as its president (2013-2014). He co-founded the 'Values and Policies of Personal Information' chair at Institut Mines-Télécom, addressing legal, technical, economic, and philosophical aspects of Big Data.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on internet economics and data in the Specialized Master's program in Big Data at Télécom Paris, and for engineering students at the Corps des Mines. He serves as area editor for Annals of Telecommunications and on the editorial board of Journal of Cultural Economics. He is also part of the CESIfo international network on the Economics of Digitization.
His work explores algorithmic bias, digital trust, and the socio-economic implications of data exploitation. Recent commentary includes discussions on Spotify's business model, algorithmic fairness, and the global data economy.
