Patrick Virtue is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Computer Science and Machine Learning departments at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. He focuses on pedagogical innovation in AI/ML education, curriculum development, and inclusive teaching practices. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from UC Berkeley (2019) and a B.S. in Computer Science Engineering (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Notre Dame (2002).
Before academia, Virtue worked at GE Healthcare from 2002–2010, contributing to medical imaging software engineering and volumetric image applications. His current roles include teaching large-scale courses such as Introduction to Machine Learning and Generative AI, and he actively designs educational methods for STEM and non-STEM audiences.
While primarily focused on teaching, his prior research spanned MRI imaging technologies, including MRI fingerprinting, complex-valued neural networks, and image reconstruction algorithms. He has contributed to open-source projects like Caffe, a deep learning framework.
Virtue collaborates with educational initiatives like AI4ALL and runs outreach programs such as the CMU AI Scholars program. He emphasizes scalable education strategies for growing student populations and has been recognized for teaching excellence during his time at UC Berkeley.
