Patrick Turner is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Bath Spa University’s School of Sciences. He previously held permanent academic roles at Goldsmiths, London Metropolitan University, and Canterbury Christ Church University. His expertise lies in cultural sociology, identity politics, hip hop studies, critical pedagogy, and qualitative research methods.
His research examines the cultural politics of hip hop, focusing on authenticity, appropriation, and educational activism. He aligns hip hop’s grassroots values with policy frameworks, emphasizing its role in youth work, theatre, and urban governance. His recent work explores hip hop’s integration into spoken word and classroom pedagogy, addressing the class dimensions of cultural identity in postmodern and neoliberal contexts.
His publications span hip hop studies, race politics, and youth culture, with a focus on pedagogies of discomfort, cultural sampling, and institutional dialogue. He has contributed to EU-funded projects on migrant stereotypes in UK rap videos and co-founded the UK HipHopEd network.
At Bath Spa University, he teaches social theory, digital life, and visual sociology. He supervised PhD students at Goldsmiths and led ESRC Doctoral School training in qualitative methods from 2014–2017.
