Dr. Patrick Rottinghaus is an Associate Professor and Program Training Director in the Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri, College of Education and Human Development. His work centers on career assessment and the psychological factors influencing career and educational decisions.
His research focuses on vocational interests, personality, abilities, self-efficacy, values, and career adaptability. He has developed several influential career assessments, including the Career Futures Inventory, Kuder Skills Assessment, Expanded Skills Confidence Inventory, and Crafting Your Future Career. His expertise bridges theory and practical application in career development.
Dr. Rottinghaus has received significant recognition for his scholarship. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17) and the National Career Development Association. Notable awards include the John Holland Award for Outstanding Achievement in Career or Personality Research and the Early Career Professional Award from the Society for Vocational Psychology.
He is actively engaged in academic publishing, serving as an associate editor for the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling and on editorial boards for the Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Career Assessment, and previously for Journal of Counseling Psychology, Career Development Quarterly, and Journal of Career Development. He is also Past-Chair of the Society for Vocational Psychology and has worked as a career assessment consultant for CPP, Inc., Kuder, Inc., and the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (U.S. Department of Defense).
Dr. Rottinghaus is currently accepting new doctoral students into the Counseling Psychology program for the 2025-2026 academic year, indicating ongoing mentorship and research activity.
