Patrick Q. Mason

Patrick Q. Mason is a Professor of Religious Studies and History at Utah State University (USU), holding the endowed Leonard J. Arrington Chair of Mormon History and Culture. He directs the Religious Studies Program and has authored or edited influential works on Mormonism, religious violence, and peacebuilding. His research bridges historical, sociological, and theological perspectives. Mason has been a Fulbright Scholar in Romania (2015) and served as president of the Mormon History Association.

He earned a PhD in History (2005), and two MA degrees in History and International Peace Studies (2003), all from the University of Notre Dame, alongside a BA in History from Brigham Young University (1999).

Mason’s research focuses on Mormonism’s historical and contemporary intersections with violence, peacebuilding, and cultural identity. His work analyzes religious conflict, theological responses to social issues, and the evolution of Mormonism in modern America. He frequently engages with media to contextualize Mormon culture and history.

His publications synthesize academic rigor with accessibility, addressing both scholarly and public audiences. Notable books include Proclaim Peace (2021), Mormonism and Violence (2019), and The Mormon Menace (2011). These works explore themes like religious violence, peace studies, and Mormonism’s historical marginalization.

Mason’s leadership roles include directing the Religious Studies Program and advising students. His academic contributions have shaped Mormon studies as a discipline, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods and ethical engagement with marginalized communities.
