Patrick Pieper is a Research Fellow at the Department of Geosciences, Institute of Meteorology, Free University of Berlin, since 2022. Previously, he served as a Postdoc at Universität Hamburg's Institute for Oceanography (2020-2021) following completion of his PhD in Earth System Sciences at the same institution.
His academic qualifications:
- PhD in Earth System Sciences, Universität Hamburg, 2020
- M.Sc. in Integrated Climate System Sciences, Universität Hamburg, 2015
- B.Sc. in Meteorology, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, 2012
Dr. Pieper specializes in Atmospheric Dynamics and Climate Science with focus on extreme weather phenomena. His research examines blocking high pressure systems, extratropical cyclones, heat waves, and extreme precipitation through Lagrangian analysis of moisture transport and atmospheric circulation patterns. He investigates quasi-stationary conditions and latent heat impacts on weather extremes using reanalysis data and climate modeling techniques.
As a core member of the Weather and Climate Processes Working Group (AG WeClip), he contributes to major projects including Effects of Latent Heat Release on Atmospheric Blocking, AL CAPONE for reducing extreme precipitation projection uncertainties, and CARDINAL for cloud-aerosol-radiation algorithm development. His work integrates isotopic water vapor analysis with dynamic meteorology to address climate change impacts on regional weather extremes.
