Patrick Mueller is an Associate Professor of Physiology at Wayne State University, where he directs a laboratory focused on understanding how the brain governs cardiovascular function. His research particularly explores neurohumoral mechanisms that link physical inactivity to hypertension and cardiovascular disease, integrating in vivo and ex vivo rodent models.

- Neural control of circulation and blood pressure
- Impact of sedentary lifestyle on sympathetic neural plasticity
- Sex-specific cardiovascular responses to chronic inactivity
- Neurochemical adaptations within the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM)
- Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling in autonomic centers
Methodological Approach: The Mueller lab employs brain microinjections, sympathetic nerve recordings, electrophysiology, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, tract tracing, and manganese-enhanced MRI to dissect central autonomic circuits.
Collaborations: Active collaborations include Ida Llewellyn-Smith (Flinders University), Jason Mateika, Charles Chung, and Christine Rabinak (all Wayne State University), as well as projects spanning rodent to human translation.
