Patrick McGurk

Dr. Patrick McGurk is a Reader in Management Practice and Associate Dean, Education at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Business and Management. He leads education initiatives, sits on the School’s Steering Group (Senior Management Team), and is a member of the Department of People and Organisations. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and additional qualifications including Dipl. Betriebswirt, BA Hons, MA, and PGCE.

His research focuses on employer engagement, public sector management, leadership development, and education policy. He has published widely on topics such as workforce development, apprenticeships, and social mobility. Notable contributions include co-authoring Employer Engagement (2023) and leading the BSc Business Management transformation project.

McGurk’s scholarly work spans journals like the Journal of Education and Work and International Journal of Public Sector Management. He has advised on government skills initiatives, served on the Mayor of London’s Skills for Londoners Stakeholder Advisory Group, and contributes to public debates via media outlets like The Conversation and Times Higher Education.

He supervises doctoral students and leads grants such as the £650,000 SKETCH Project (Student Knowledge Exchange Through Community Hubs). Awards include the Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and a Highly Commended Emerald Literati Award for his 2009 paper on public sector leadership.
