Patrick Liesch

Patrick Liesch serves as the Director of the UW-Madison Insect Diagnostic Lab within the Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Known as the "Wisconsin Bug Guy," he plays a key role in the university's extension services, providing insect identification and diagnostic support across Wisconsin.

Liesch holds a B.S. in biological sciences from UW-Parkside and an M.S. in entomology from UW-Madison. His educational background forms the foundation for his work in practical entomology and public outreach.

His research interests focus on practical entomology applications, particularly insect diagnostics, vector-borne diseases, and periodical cicada biology. Liesch has developed specialized expertise in Wisconsin's insect populations, creating resources like the Wisconsin Periodical Cicada Website (cicadas.wisc.edu) that combines historical data with community science contributions. His work bridges academic entomology with practical applications for homeowners, agricultural producers, and pest control professionals.

The recent publications highlight his focus on emerging insect issues in Wisconsin, including invasive species monitoring, periodical cicada research, and public education initiatives.
