Patrick James Codd is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Duke University, holding joint appointments in the Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences. He is a core faculty member in Innovation & Entrepreneurship and part of the Duke Cancer Institute. Codd’s research focuses on minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques, medical robotics, and laser surgery, with affiliations to the Duke Brain Tool Laboratory. He completed his M.D. at Harvard Medical School (2008) and trained in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (2008–2009) before specializing in Neurosurgery there until 2014. His work bridges neurosurgery and engineering, emphasizing robotic systems, tissue-sensing technologies, and intraoperative diagnostics. Publications highlight advancements in endonasal robotics, fluorescence-guided tumor detection, and laser surgery planning. His contributions span surgical innovation, educational leadership, and clinical research in skull base surgery and neuro-oncology.
Research interests include developing robotic tools for neurosurgery, optimizing surgical techniques for cerebrovascular and skull base disorders, and leveraging machine learning for real-time tissue classification. He teaches courses in biomedical engineering and mechanical systems, reflecting his dual expertise. Notable projects include the Tendon-Actuated Concentric Tube Endonasal Robot (TACTER) and systems for automated tumor detection. Codd’s work has been featured in Duke’s MEDx initiatives and research blogs, emphasizing translational innovation in healthcare.
His lab’s focus on surgical efficiency includes optimizing instrument utilization via RFID tracking and improving postoperative outcomes through device innovation. Current efforts target real-time intraoperative diagnostics, robotic precision in laser ablation, and enhancing patient quality of life through minimally invasive approaches. Future work includes expanding applications of augmented reality in neurosurgery and refining AI-driven surgical tools.
