Patrick Diamond

Patrick Diamond is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California San Diego. He received his PhD from MIT in 1979 and has made fundamental contributions to plasma physics and fusion energy research. His honors include the Hannes Alfvén Prize and the 2012 Nuclear Fusion Award from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

His research focuses on:

• Turbulence and transport in magnetized plasmas
• Zonal flow dynamics and self-organization
• Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics
• Magnetic confinement fusion physics

Recent work investigates turbulent transport barriers, staircase structures in potential vorticity, and machine learning approaches to turbulence modeling. His publications demonstrate consistent focus on bridging theoretical plasma physics with fusion energy applications, particularly regarding tokamak confinement transitions and turbulence suppression mechanisms.

He has served as Director of the Fusion Theory Institute in Daejeon, Korea, and mentors numerous students in theoretical plasma physics.
