Dr. Patrick C. Trettenbrein is a Researcher and Lecturer at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences and the University of Göttingen. His primary affiliation is with the Department of Neuropsychology at the Max Planck Institute. He holds a PhD in Psychology from the International Max Planck Research School NeuroCom and an MA in Linguistics from the University of Graz.
His research focuses on the neurobiology of language, particularly the modality (in)dependence of syntactic processing and the neurocognitive basis of sign languages. Current projects investigate word class distinctions in German Sign Language (DGS) and the functional neuroanatomy of sign language processing. He has been funded by the German Research Foundation Priority Programme on 'Visual Communication.'
Key contributions include meta-analyses of sign language neuroanatomy and studies on gestural demonstrations as markers of lexical categories. Upcoming talks address iconic strategies in DGS and cortical pathways in deaf signers. His work bridges cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, and societal impacts of cognitive science.
