Dr. Patrick Bischof is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Structural Engineering, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich. He has been working at ETH Zurich since 2015 and completed his doctoral studies there in 2023 under Professor Walter Kaufmann.
- Position: Research Fellow, Chair of Concrete Structures and Bridge Design
- Department: Institute of Structural Engineering
- University: ETH Zurich
- Education: Dr. sc. ETH Zurich (2023), MSc ETH in Civil Engineering (2011)
Dr. Bischof's research focuses on rethinking structural concrete for digital fabrication and investigating the behavior of concrete structures under fire conditions. His work bridges traditional structural engineering with innovative digital construction technologies, particularly in the areas of 3D concrete printing, digital casting, and sustainable construction methods. His research demonstrates how structurally efficient geometries can reduce material usage and environmental impact in construction while maintaining structural integrity.
His publications show a clear research trajectory exploring digital fabrication techniques for concrete structures and fire safety analysis. The articles reveal a strong emphasis on practical applications of digital technologies in construction, with a focus on structural efficiency, material optimization, and fire resistance. His work on digitally fabricated connections demonstrates that these techniques can meet or exceed requirements defined in design codes despite using smaller aggregate sizes.
- SGEB prize for Master's thesis (2011)
Dr. Bischof actively contributes to standardization efforts as a member of CEN/TC 250/SC 2 Project Team and various task groups related to fire safety in concrete structures. He also serves as a structural engineer and co-managing director at DSE systems AG since 2023, demonstrating his ability to bridge academic research with practical engineering applications.
