Patricia White serves as Centennial Chair and Professor of Film and Media Studies at Swarthmore College, concurrently holding leadership positions as Director of the Aydelotte Foundation and Program Coordinator for Gender & Sexuality Studies.
Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in History of Consciousness from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a B.A. in Film Studies from Yale University.
White's research pioneers feminist and LGBTQ+ film theory, with seminal contributions including Women’s Cinema/World Cinema: Projecting Contemporary Feminisms (2015) and Uninvited: Classical Hollywood Cinema and Lesbian Representability (1999). She co-authors the widely adopted textbook The Film Experience and currently investigates independent US women's filmmaking in the twenty-first century, emphasizing evolving representational strategies and production contexts.
Professionally, she serves on the boards of Women Make Movies and Film Quarterly, while actively shaping discourse as a member of the Camera Obscura editorial collective and overseer of its Duke University Press book series.
