Patricia Osseweijer

Prof. Patricia Osseweijer is a Full Professor and Section Leader of the Biotechnology and Society group at Delft University of Technology’s Faculty of Applied Sciences. Her research focuses on linking biobased innovations to societal challenges, emphasizing sustainable value chain design, public engagement, and policy-making. She holds a PhD in Science Communication (Free University Amsterdam) and a Master’s in Molecular Biology (Utrecht University).

Research interests include ethical, legal, and social aspects of biotechnology, stakeholder interaction, and capability-sensitive design for inclusive value chains. She leads the Dual Degree PhD program in Brazil targeting 100+ graduates by 2025 and co-initiated TU Delft’s first MOOC on Industrial Biotechnology (EdX).

Publications span over 90 articles/reports, with recent work addressing biofuel sustainability, wastewater valorization, and aviation biofuel impacts. Awards include the 2015 Lorentz Fellowship for integrating social sciences with technology.

Grants include leadership in the €120M BE-Basic consortium and the extended 'Economy, Sustainability, and Policy' program. She coordinates international courses and joint research projects in Brazil, emphasizing education innovation and global collaboration.

Labs/Teams: Biotechnology and Society Research Group, collaborating with UNICAMP and industry partners on bioeconomy strategies and public policy frameworks.
