Patricia Alvarez Astacio is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Brandeis University, specializing in Cultural Anthropology, Ethnography, and Latin America studies. Her work bridges critical theory, sensory ethnography, and documentary arts, focusing on ethical fashion supply chains and BIPOC labor narratives.
- Ph.D. and M.A. in Anthropology from University of California, Santa Cruz
Her research explores intersections of political economy, gender studies, and aesthetic theory through multisensory ethnographic methods. Current projects include a book manuscript Moral Fibers: Making Fashion Ethical and a film Entretejido examining racial politics in textile production.
Scientific awards include grants from Sundance Institute (2024-2025), Creative Capital (2024), and National Science Foundation (2009-2012), among others. She has received multiple film production and post-production grants, including support from ITVS and Latino Public Broadcasting.
