Dr. Patrice Ludwig is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at James Madison University (JMU), where she has served since 2009. Her research focuses on oyster reef restoration, population ecology, and innovation in biology education. She pioneered projects such as designing oyster habitats, restoring dung beetle communities, and developing bear collar technology for ecological monitoring. Dr. Ludwig holds a PhD in Biology/Population Ecology from the University of Virginia (2008), an MS in Biology/Ecology from JMU (2001), and a BS in Biology from JMU (1996).
Her research interests also include integrating social network analysis and qualitative methods with traditional statistical approaches (Fisherian and Bayesian). She teaches Biology 114 and 124 lectures, emphasizing hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. Recent work explores the efficacy of sunitinib in renal cancer treatment and the impact of innovation courses on student outcomes. She collaborates with conservation organizations and industry to apply unmanned systems in ecological research.
Ludwig’s pedagogical innovations include validating the COPUS instrument for classroom behavior analysis and promoting antiracist reforms in scientific societies. She advocates for inclusive education strategies and has institutionalized collaborative innovation programs across disciplines at JMU.
