Parveen Shaheen

Dr. Parveen Shaheen serves as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) at Rutgers University. She joined Rutgers in Fall 2013 and teaches Hindi and Urdu courses. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. from Lucknow University, India, with a dissertation focused on retention of literacy, which informs her pedagogical approaches.

Dr. Shaheen specializes in developing standards-based curricula for Hindi-Urdu instruction, emphasizing thematic organization, task-based lessons, and student-centered learning environments enriched by educational technology. She employs methodologies that simulate real-world language usage to enhance practical proficiency. Certified by ACTFL as an oral proficiency tester for Hindi and a trainer for Hindi-Urdu, she contributes to language assessment standards.

Prior to Rutgers, she taught at institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her career also includes teaching at Kingsboro Community College's Teacher's Program. She actively advances language education through pedagogical innovation and intercultural communication strategies.
