Prof. Benno Parthier was a distinguished academic and scientist in plant biochemistry and molecular biology. He served as Professor (C4) of Cellular Biochemistry at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (1993–1998) and as Founding Director (1991–1997) and later Director Emeritus of the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB). His career spanned roles as Managing Director of the IPB, Head of Hormone Research, and President of the Leopoldina (1990–2003).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Botany (1961), Halle University
- Habilitation in Molecular Biology (1967), Halle University
- Postdoctoral fellowship at Stockholm University (1965–1966)
Research Interests: Parthier’s work focused on chloroplast differentiation, plant hormone signaling (e.g., jasmonic acid), and molecular biology. His contributions advanced understanding of plant developmental processes and hormone regulation, establishing the IPB as a global leader in phytohormone research.
Awards:
- Hans Olaf Henkel Prize (2007)
- Cothenius Medal (2003)
- Leibniz Association’s Science Policy Award
Leadership & Legacy: He steered the IPB through German reunification, securing its status in the Leibniz Society. His tenure at the Leopoldina positioned it as Germany’s National Academy. Parthier also contributed to science policy, serving on councils like the Wissenschaftsrat and Beckurts Foundation.
Labs/Teams: Directed the IPB’s Hormone Research Department and co-founded the institute’s jasmonic acid research program, a global benchmark in plant biochemistry.
