Associate Professor Parag Deotare holds joint appointments in the Departments of Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Applied Physics at the University of Michigan. He directs the Excitonics and Photonics Laboratory (ExP Lab), focusing on exciton dynamics in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides and organic semiconductors, with applications in quantum metrology, quantum information science, and on-chip data communication. His research bridges quantum optics, nanophotonics, and material science.
Education: PhD in Physics from Harvard University (2012), MS in Physics from Texas A&M (2004), and BE in Engineering from the University of Pune, India (2004). Postdoctoral training at MIT preceded his faculty appointment at the University of Michigan in 2016.
Research interests span experimental quantum optics, semiconductor physics, and excitonic phenomena. Recent work emphasizes strain effects on excitons, 1D excitonic guides, and optoexcitonic platforms for anti-tamper hardware. Awards include the 2017 Air Force Young Investigator Award and the 2017 HKN Professor of the Year Award.
Lab activities involve interdisciplinary collaborations, with a focus on hybrid material interfaces and nanoscale strain engineering. The ExP Lab is co-located in the Randall Laboratory and Homer A. Neal Lab on the Ann Arbor campus.
