Paolo Gruppuso is an environmental anthropologist affiliated with the University of Gastronomic Sciences, where he serves as vice-convenor of the Master of Gastronomy: Creativity, Ecology, and Education program. He teaches courses on Food and Anthropology and leads workshops on Deep Mapping. His research focuses on interdisciplinary studies of sustainability, urban ecology, and human-environment relations, including the social and environmental history of wetlands in Agro Pontino, Italy.
Education: PhD in Social Anthropology (2016) from the University of Aberdeen, with a dissertation on environmental conflicts in Agro Pontino's protected wetlands.
Research Interests: His work bridges environmental anthropology, urban ecology, and gastronomic studies. Recent projects explore urban agriculture, food systems, and wetland conservation within broader socio-ecological frameworks. At the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (2018), he investigated wetland conservation history and its intersections with environmental science and policy.
Key Contributions: Published on environmental conflicts in the Anthropocene, wetland geohistory, and marginalized communities' roles in environmental governance. Current projects analyze Latina (Italy) as a case study for urban ecology and food sustainability.
