Paola Bertucci is a Professor of History and Secondary Professor of the History of Medicine at Yale University. She holds a DPhil in History of Science from the University of Oxford. Her research explores the intersection of humans, artifacts, and natural knowledge in early modern Europe, with a focus on the Enlightenment, material culture, and the history of science, technology, and medicine.
Her work bridges disciplines, examining how technical practices (e.g., electrical experimentation, mechanical arts) shaped epistemic categories like ‘natural order’ and ‘human progress.’ Key contributions include Artisanal Enlightenment (2017), which redefines the Enlightenment’s relationship with artisanal knowledge, and Viaggio nel paese delle meraviglie (2007), analyzing scientific curiosity in 18th-century Italy. She has curated exhibits at Florence’s Galileo Museum, including The Spectacle of Science and Science at Home.
Bertucci’s awards include the Louis Gottschalk Prize (2019, 2015), Margaret W. Rossiter Prize (2016), and the Poorvu Family Award for Interdisciplinary Teaching (2012). She teaches courses on the Scientific Revolution, material culture, and the history of medicine.
