Paola Basile is a Professor of Italian and French at Lake Erie College, part of the School of Education. Her teaching emphasizes immersive language experiences, including study abroad programs, and she specializes in Comparative Literature, Foreign Language Pedagogy, and Italian Regional Gastronomy. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Université de Montréal, an M.A. in French Studies from McGill University, and advanced degrees in Modern Languages from the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and a diploma in Translation from Université de Grenoble.
Her research explores interdisciplinary themes such as journey narratives, otherness, and identity through literature, art, and philosophy. She has presented over 30 scholarly works internationally and co-organized academic conferences across North America and Europe. Basile has developed the Italian Studies major and co-developed the French Studies program at Lake Erie College, while also directing the annual IACF Literature Award process since 2006.
Her publications span textbooks, creative works, and translated materials, including the 2023 book Explore Italy: Regional Cuisine, Culture, and Language. She has received numerous grants for cultural initiatives, travel, and pedagogical innovations, supported by institutions like the IACF, NOIA, and the Italian Consulate of Detroit. Her professional memberships include the American Association for Italian Studies and the Canadian Society for Italian Studies.
