Panagiotis Souganidis is the Charles H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Chicago. His research spans partial differential equations with applications to phase transitions, mathematical biology, and stochastic analysis. He holds editorial positions at leading journals including Communications in Partial Differential Equations and Journal de Mathematiques Pures et Appliques, and serves on the Council of the American Mathematical Society.
His research focuses on qualitative properties of solutions to elliptic/parabolic and hyperbolic PDE, particularly conservation laws and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Key contributions include developing the theory of stochastic viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear stochastic PDE with multiplicative noise, homogenization in random environments, and biological models for motor effects. His work bridges abstract theory with applications in physics and biology through rigorous mathematical frameworks.
Recent publications demonstrate sustained innovation in stochastic homogenization, conservation laws with rough fluxes, and biological modeling. His research exhibits strong international collaboration patterns, frequently co-authoring with leading mathematicians like P.-L. Lions and B. Perthame. The work consistently addresses foundational challenges in nonlinear PDE while expanding into new application domains.
Professor Souganidis has advised 10 doctoral graduates who now hold academic positions at institutions including UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of Massachusetts. He currently mentors 4 graduate students and has served on numerous editorial boards and professional committees, including the Council of the American Mathematical Society (2009-2012) and the Board of Governors of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (2010-2015).
