Panagiotis Balermpas

Prof. Dr. med. Panagiotis Balermpas serves as Chief Physician of the Department of Radio-Oncology at University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and is an Adjunct Professor in Radio-Oncology at the University of Zurich. He coordinates the Head and Neck Tumor Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Zurich and serves as Clinical Director of the Department of Radio-Oncology at USZ Airport.

Specializing in multimodal therapy of head and neck tumors, organ-preserving treatment of pharyngeal and laryngeal carcinomas, and radiotherapy of skin tumors, Dr. Balermpas has developed expertise in MR-Linac-based treatment, stereotactic radiotherapy, and combination therapies involving radiotherapy with chemotherapy or antibody therapy. His clinical work focuses on HPV-associated malignancies and translational radiation oncology.

Dr. Balermpas's research spans head and neck cancer clinical multimodality treatment, development of new radiation and planning techniques, and the immunology of head and neck and anal cancers. His publication record shows consistent contributions to radiation oncology literature with recent work focusing on re-irradiation protocols, treatment guidelines, and clinical trial outcomes across multiple cancer types.

He has received the Q-Award USZ 2020 for developing an interdisciplinary "fast track" intake system for head and neck cancer patients and serves on editorial boards for Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Oncology, and other prominent journals.

As an active participant in clinical trials and guideline development, Dr. Balermpas contributes to multiple international cancer treatment protocols and serves on committees for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), European Society of Radiation Oncology (ESTRO), and other major oncology organizations.
