Pamela Weathers is a Professor of Biology & Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), with affiliations in Biomedical Engineering and Biochemistry. She holds a BS from Marquette University (1965) and a PhD in Botany & Plant Pathology from Michigan State University (1974).
Her research focuses on Artemisia annua and artemisinin, particularly their applications in malaria treatment and tissue engineering. She pioneered the edible Artemisia concept and developed plant-based scaffolds for biomedical use. Her lab has produced over 130 peer-reviewed papers, 3 patents, and established WPI as a leader in plant biotechnology.
- Key Research: Artemisinin biosynthesis, bioreactor design, antimalarial therapies, and decellularized plant scaffolds
- Leadership: Former Judd Hill Chair of Agricultural Biotechnology at Arkansas State University, SIVB Board member
- Awards: AAAS Fellow (2014), SIVB Distinguished Service Award (2014), Democracy in Action Award (2007)
She has supervised >20 MS and 16 PhD students, managed multidisciplinary labs, and secured funding from NIH, NSF, and NASA. Her work bridges plant biology, biotechnology, and global health.
