Pamela Sandstrom

Pamela Sandstrom is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno. With over 15 years of experience, she has impacted 13,000+ undergraduates through courses ranging from introductory cell biology to advanced molecular genetics. Her work focuses on education innovation and student engagement.

Dr. Sandstrom specializes in biology education research, particularly exploring how active learning pedagogy and technology integration improve student understanding of complex concepts. She has pioneered the Biology Peer Instruction Program, which has trained hundreds of peer instructors since 2008. Her publications reflect a dual focus on biochemical research (bark beetle pheromone synthesis) and educational innovation (peer-led learning models).

Her 2006-2008 publications in Insect Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Journal of Chemical Ecology established her expertise in cytochrome P450 enzyme function in insect pheromone production. Subsequent educational scholarship has demonstrated the effectiveness of peer instruction and active learning in improving student outcomes across biology disciplines.
