Dr. Pamela J. Stewart is a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. She collaborates closely with Prof. Andrew Strathern, co-authoring over 50 books and hundreds of articles. Her research focuses on Pacific cultures (particularly Papua New Guinea), Asia (Taiwan), and Europe (Scotland, Ireland), emphasizing ritual studies, disaster anthropology, and cultural heritage. She has held visiting positions at institutions like the University of Durham, University of Aberdeen, and Academia Sinica in Taipei.
Her research explores global issues through cross-cultural lenses, including political peace-making, environmental sustainability, and the intersection of indigenous knowledge with modern challenges. She co-edits the Journal of Ritual Studies, the Palgrave Studies in Disaster Anthropology, and multiple book series. Notable works include Sustainability, Conservation, and Creativity (2019) and Dealing with Disasters (2021). She received the 2012 De Carle Lectureship for her contributions to peace-making theories.
Dr. Stewart’s research integrates ethnography with interdisciplinary approaches, addressing topics like eco-cosmologies, ritual practices, and cultural preservation. Her recent work emphasizes global disaster responses and the role of ritual in contemporary crises.
