Pam Estes Brewer is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Human-Centered Information Design and Technology within Mercer University's School of Engineering. She serves as Vice President of Membership on the IEEE Professional Communication Society Board of Governors and has established herself as a leading expert in virtual and hybrid team communication. Dr. Brewer directs a program that integrates technical communication with human-centered design principles, preparing students for careers at the intersection of technology and user experience.
- PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric from Texas Tech University (2008)
- MA in English from Wright State University (1983)
- BA in English from Wright State University (1981)
Dr. Brewer's research focuses on communication in hybrid and virtual teams, online teaching methodologies, and research methods in technical communication. Her work bridges theory and practice, with particular emphasis on how teams function effectively across geographical and cultural boundaries. She has developed innovative approaches to training students in usability research and international communication, creating pedagogical frameworks that prepare students for global workplaces. Her research often involves collaborations with government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, where her students have conducted usability assessments.
Analysis of Dr. Brewer's recent publications reveals a clear trajectory toward the integration of artificial intelligence in communication education and practice. Her 2024 publication on using AI as a third participant in student advising demonstrates her forward-thinking approach to emerging technologies. Earlier works established foundational knowledge about virtual team dynamics, which now informs her current research on human-AI collaboration. Across all publications, consistent themes include effective communication strategies, cross-cultural understanding, and practical applications of communication theory in professional settings.
