Pablo Ottonello is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He currently serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of International Economics and Associate Editor of the Journal of Monetary Economics. Previously, he held a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Economics (2015–2015+), where his research focused on macroeconomic fluctuations, financial markets, and policy responses to crises. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in 2015.
His research interests span Macroeconomics, International Economics, Finance, and Monetary Economics. Notable work includes a MITRE Faculty Research Award-winning project (The Dynamics of Capital and Labor Misallocation in the United States, with Thomas Winberry), analyzing microdata to model business cycle impacts. Ottonello’s career includes prior roles as a research economist at Uruguay’s CERES think tank (2004–2009) and teaching courses on financial economics and macroeconomic theory.
He actively engages in academic leadership, contributing to editorial roles and mentoring students through courses like ECON 435 at the University of Michigan. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis, emphasizing policy relevance in financial crises and economic stability.
