Pablo García Varela is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of the Basque Country, affiliated with the Department of History, Art and Geography and the Contemporary History research area. He is an active member of the Contemporary History 1 (HC1) research group, focusing on modern historical dynamics in the Basque context.
He completed his doctoral degree at the University of the Basque Country in 2019 with a dissertation titled "The world of drugs in the Basque Country and its relationship with the Basque National Liberation Movement (MLNV) ETA-m against the drug mafia (1980-2000)", supervised by Dr. Gaizka Fernández Soldevilla and Dr. Antonio Rivera Blanco. His educational background centers on advanced historical research methodologies applied to regional socio-political conflicts.
Dr. García Varela's research critically examines the intersection of illicit economies and political violence, with primary emphasis on drug trafficking networks and their complex relationship with separatist movements like ETA during Spain's late-20th-century turbulent period. His work integrates socio-historical analysis to unravel how organized crime influenced Basque nationalist struggles between 1980 and 2000.
As part of the Contemporary History 1 research group, he contributes to collaborative projects analyzing Basque socio-political evolution, particularly investigating how counter-narcotics operations shaped regional security policies and movement strategies during the specified timeframe.
