Professor Dr Pablo A. Ubierna holds a dual affiliation: he is a Professor of Byzantine History at the National Paedagogical University (UNIPE) and Director of the Medieval Studies Department at CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council, Buenos Aires). His research focuses on the Syriac and Byzantine Apocalyptic Tradition, particularly the Biblical Commentary Tradition of the Book of Daniel. He was a Petra Kappert Fellow at the Hamburg Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) from July to September 2022, during which he explored the intersection of prophetic commentaries with broader apocalyptic literary traditions. Ubierna earned his PhD from the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne and has authored extensively on Oriental languages, apocalyptic texts, and manuscript culture. He also coordinates the Programme for the Study of Oriental Languages at CONICET and edits the Series Byzantina & Orientalia.
His work integrates codicological analysis with historical context, emphasizing the materiality of medieval texts. At the CSMC, he focused on comparative studies of Byzantine and Syriac commentaries, aiming to contextualize them within transregional prophetic traditions. Beyond academic roles, Ubierna teaches Syriac language and literature and has collaborated internationally on projects preserving manuscript heritage.
