Paavo Rasilo is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Aalto University, holding a Doctor of Science (Technology) in Electrical Engineering from the same institution (2012). He served as a Docent in Magnetic Materials and Their Applications at the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2016 to 2021. His research focuses on electromagnetic materials, finite element analysis, electrical machines, and power electronics, with a strong emphasis on practical applications such as thermal management systems for railway traction motors and advanced modeling of ferrite materials. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and actively contributes to the academic community through editorial roles at IEEE journals and dissertation examinations.
Key research themes include optimizing electrical machine performance through material characterization (e.g., Mn-Zn ferrites), simulating cutting deterioration in electrical sheets, and developing high-efficiency synchronous machine topologies. Recent work highlights include toroidal inductor design for renewable energy systems and thermal management advancements in heavy-duty applications.
Rasilo’s professional activities include serving as a reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Magnetics and Energy Conversion, and acting as an opponent in doctoral examinations at leading institutions. His contributions also extend to interdisciplinary work, such as sensor-based analysis of cattle locomotion.
