Oğuz Uzol

Oğuz Uzol is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Middle East Technical University (METU), and serves as the Director of METU Center for Wind Energy (RÜZGEM). He graduated from METU's Aeronautical Engineering Department in 1992, earned his M.Sc. in 1995, and completed his Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University in 2000, focusing on turbine blade cooling in aircraft jet engines. After postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins University, he returned to METU in 2005, where he has been advancing wind energy research through experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics expertise.

RÜZGEM, established in 2011, emerged from interdisciplinary collaboration across eight METU departments and TOBB ETÜ. The center aims to become a national focal point for wind energy, with six specialized laboratories including Aerodynamics, Structural Mechanics, and High-Performance Computing. Uzol emphasizes the importance of developing indigenous Turkish wind turbine technology to avoid future dependence on foreign systems, aligning with Turkey's 2023 goal of 20 gigawatts of wind energy capacity.

The center's research infrastructure, funded via DPT (State Planning Organization) programs, addresses Turkey's lack of advanced research facilities in wind energy. Uzol highlights the center's role in boosting academic development at METU through state-of-the-art equipment, enabling high-impact publications and industry collaboration. Sustainability plans include engaging with investors, manufacturers, and participation in EU/international projects post-initial funding.

Uzol advises young researchers to pursue available funding opportunities aggressively, leveraging Turkey's less competitive grant environment compared to the U.S. His career trajectory—from aeronautical engineering to leading a multi-million dollar wind energy initiative—demonstrates the potential for impactful academic growth through persistence and strategic vision.
